B5074 establishes that designated fire departments will be “safe stations” and provide basic screening and coordinated response to substance use concerns by designated professionals, including certified substance use disorder peer specialists. Safe stations are also to provide transportation to acute medical services when warranted.
Safe stations provide an alternative to emergency rooms and can serve as a diversion for people who need help but are not at the point of an acute medical crisis.
